What to know before you order cbd.

What CBD is — and what it isn't

CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid that won't get you high. It's the counterpart to THC: where THC is intoxicating, CBD is not, and people reach for it for calm, recovery, and sleep rather than euphoria. It comes from both hemp and cannabis plants, and in Massachusetts you'll find it as oils, gummies, tinctures, capsules, and topicals.

Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, isolate

This label decides how much of the plant comes along with the CBD — and whether there's any THC.

  • Full-spectrum. All cannabinoids and terpenes, plus a legal trace of THC. The fullest entourage effect; can affect a drug test.
  • Broad-spectrum. The supporting cannabinoids without the THC — a middle path for people who want more than isolate but no THC.
  • Isolate. Pure CBD, nothing else. Flavorless, predictable, THC-free.

Ratios and the entourage effect

A lot of the best CBD products aren't CBD-only — they pair it with a little THC. Ratios like 20:1, 2:1, or 1:1 (CBD to THC) let you tune the experience: higher CBD keeps things clear-headed, while a touch of THC deepens relief through what's called the entourage effect, where the compounds work better together than alone. For relaxation without a high, lean high-CBD; for pain or sleep, a 1:1 is popular.

Hemp CBD vs. dispensary CBD

Both are legal, but they're held to different standards. Hemp-derived CBD (legal nationwide under the 2018 Farm Bill) is loosely regulated, and lab tests have repeatedly caught products that over- or under-state their CBD or contain more THC than labeled. Cannabis-derived CBD sold here is tested under Massachusetts cannabis law for potency and contaminants — you know what's in the bottle. If consistency matters, dispensary CBD is the safer buy.

Formats and how to dose

CBD oils and tinctures give the finest control and a faster sublingual onset; gummies and capsules are easy and consistent; topicals target a specific spot. Whatever the format, start low — around 10–25 mg — and stay consistent, since CBD tends to work cumulatively rather than from one large dose. Give it several days before deciding whether to adjust.
